Description

Position Overview

The Estimating Engineer will play a vital role in supporting the delivery of competitive, accurate, and timely bids for complex heavy civil construction projects. This position focuses on quantifying construction elements, analyzing design documents, and collaborating closely with the estimating team to prepare detailed takeoffs and cost data. The Estimating Engineer’s work will directly contribute to the success of pursuits in sectors such as transportation infrastructure, aviation facilities, school site developments, and large-scale civil works. By applying advanced quantity analysis, engineering math, and digital takeoff tools, the Estimating Engineer will help identify risks, validate scopes, and drive efficiencies that strengthen bid proposals and project outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Quantify Construction Elements
Support estimators by performing quantity takeoffs using PDF plans, 2D CAD files, and 3D models. Typical scopes of work include, but are not limited to:

    • Demolition
    • Earthwork
    • Roadways and highways
    • Aviation-related infrastructure
    • School facilities and site development
    • Underground utilities
  • Earthwork & Demolition Volume Calculations

    • Generate quantities using 2D PDF plans or 3D models.
    • Apply Average End Area volume methods to calculate cut and fill volumes accurately.
  1. Data Analysis and Documentation

    • Create Excel spreadsheets to calculate, compare, and summarize material quantities.
    • Review and interpret contract documents, including drawings and technical specifications.
    • Maintain organized records of takeoffs, working drawings, and summary documentation.
  1. Understanding Project Scope and Requirements

    • Interpret project scope, constraints/phasing, construction schedules, and material specifications.
    • Perform takeoffs using incomplete or preliminary design documents by conceptually visualizing design intent (advanced skill).
  1. Quality Control and Coordination

    • Identify missing design elements, scope gaps, or overlaps with other disciplines.
    • Produce visual exhibits or markup sheets to document takeoff assumptions and clarify inclusions/exclusions.
    • Collaborate with other takeoff personnel to ensure consistency and completeness of quantity assessments.
Bid Preparation Support
    • Assist estimators in preparing for bid closings by organizing and formatting PDF plan sheets.
    • Provide support during bid closings by running bids.
    • Requesting and leveling subcontractor and vendor quotes
Time Management and Execution
    • Manage time effectively, assess task complexity, and stay on schedule while ensuring accuracy and thoroughness of work.
    • Track the time required to complete each takeoff to accurately assess turnaround capabilities and improve scheduling efficiency.

Required Qualifications:

Construction Document Proficiency
Experience reviewing construction drawings and project specifications, including general arrangements, plans and elevations, topographic site plans, grading plans, typical sections, detail drawings, and cross sections.

Engineering Math Skills
Strong mathematical skills with the ability to accurately measure, calculate, and convert material volumes for construction applications.

Microsoft Excel Proficiency
Advanced knowledge of Excel, including the ability to build and interpret complex formulas for calculating end areas, volumes, and summarizing material quantities.

Analytical Ability
Capable of creating and validating advanced mathematical formulas to support area and volume calculations.

Takeoff Software Experience
Familiarity with digital takeoff tools such as AGTEK, On-Screen Takeoff, Bluebeam, PlanSwift, or similar software is preferred but not required.

Design-Build Project Experience

Prior experience working on or estimating for design-build heavy civil construction projects is preferred but not mandatory.

Industry Experience

Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in heavy civil construction, estimating, or related fields.
